The study of Usul ul-Fiqh is at the heart of the greatest intellectual undertaking in human civilization: the Islamic scholarly tradition. This field is a demonstration of the lengths to which the scholars of the Islamic tradition went in order to reach consistency in legal theory and judgment. Usul is a study about what sources can be used in Fiqh (Islamic law), how they can be used, and who can use them. It also includes discussions on the metaphysical nature of legal judgments and their philosophical and theological underpinnings. This text was written by the great Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Faasi to be an introduction and summarization of Usul ul-Fiqh. Although many other summaries of Usul exist, this text is distinguished by its tremendous depth while maintaining brevity and clarity. It is also of particular importance due to being derived from two important source texts, Al-Mukhtasar by Ibn Al-Hajib and Jam’ ul-Jawami’ by Ibn Al-Subki.
This translation presents the Arabic text and translation in facing text to create a clear and useful manual to be used in a classroom environment. The book also includes a series of exercises and discussion questions at the end of the book written by the translator to help facilitate a closer reading of the text and promote discussion and research.
